What is ELDT?
To standardize safety skills among new drivers, the FMCSA has implemented the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) mandate. This mandate sets a consistent national standard, ensuring that all new drivers have the same safety skills, regardless of their state of licensure. ELDT regulations establish the minimum federal training standards that must be met before entry-level drivers can take specific CDL skills or knowledge tests.
- • First-time applicants for a Class A or Class B CDL
- • Class B holders upgrading to a Class A CDL
- • First-time applicants for a school bus (S), passenger (P), or hazardous materials (H) endorsement
Who Must Complete Entry-Level Driver Training?
The ELDT requirements apply to individuals who obtain a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) on or after February 7, 2022. Those who were issued a CDL or S, P, or H endorsement before this date are exempt from these training requirements.
